Day trip to Hellnar

A trip to Iceland is a bit like going to watch the Earth from right under your nose. A landscape of fissures billowing steam, thermal pools, glaciers, geysers and lava. Beside well know day trip from Reykjavik, like Geysir and the blue lagoon, there are plenty of lesser-known places that offer the same kind of raw beauty, but with fewer people.

Cozy summer houses in Hellnar with Mt. Stapafell at the background.

Hellnar, Stapafell

Hellnar (pronounced: Het-nar), is a small village at the foot of the enormous ice-covered Snaefellsjökull glacier on the northwest coast, peninsula of Snæfellsnes. In an area of wilderness that brims with lava caves and geothermal pools, just over two hours from the capital. For a unique experience, take the walking trail (2.5 km) between Hellnar and Arnarstapi. Beautiful scenery of sea birds and impressive lava rock formations, can be seen all along the walking trail. At the end of the trail right below the village of Hellnar make sure to stop at the coffee house. Delicious home made cakes, light meals and great coffee are a great ingredients to make your day feel even better. (Open during the summer only)

"The coffee house at the end of the world."

Interesting. When I look at your pictures, I can see myself in them sipping coffee, walking along the harbor. Sitting on a windy outcrop. I'm already there. But my workaday body is still in Kansas. There is a warping of the time/space continuum going on here.
