Ólafsvík

One of the places I never described in my previous blogs is where I live. Ólafsvík, Iceland. I think it's the right time to give some background information about this village, what there is to do here and who knows, maybe one day our paths will cross and all this info will become useful.

Ólafsvík is a small fishery town near the west end of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. It is one of the most exciting towns in west Iceland and I'm not just saying so because I live here. Driving through the town wont give you much indication of what lies ahead, but in case you passing by, make sure to stop and take a look around. If you read my previous post about "My little monster" than you are already know about the magnificent waterfall I have in my backyard.

Ólafsvík has more to offer than just falling waters. The old pack house in the center of the town gives an interesting insight of Iceland old fishing days and some beautiful artifacts crafted by the locals. The little black house was built in the 18th century and since it stands in the middle of the town as a tribute for the people who build this town. Inside there is an exhibition of objects which were used by locals back in the old days. 2 minutes walk from there is the marine museum. Nice exhibition of live fish and other creatures that are the source of income for our economy. Ólafsvík is also the capital of the region known as "miniature Iceland". In only two hours drive from Reykjavik visitors can witness volcanoes, glaciers, natural hot baths, waterfalls, whale watching, unique birds all surrounded by beautiful nature only Iceland can offer. It takes only couple hours of driving to see all that but more time is required to fully experience our place.

I live here for almost two years and I can't say I've seen it all. Posting photos will only give you vague idea of what I'm talking about so you better come and see it yourself. When in Ólafsvík let me know, I'll might just give you a free tour.

I drove through there on my way around the Peninsula in March 2008. It's absolutely gorgeous (like almost every place in Iceland). Next time I'll take you up on the offer!

I have often wanted to visit Iceland, especially this time of year when it is so hot here in the Southeast United States. Perhaps someday I will be able to make the trip and see your beautiful country.

Hi! Thanks for your comments on my blog and for following. :) Now I have discovered your blog, I realise you are such a breath of fresh air ... your oppinions, you tell it as you see it. I admire this.

Iceland, so small yet so dynamic ... you are doing a great job in selling your country. Being from Scotland, (and not so far a way), I look at you and wish Scotland to be independent. One day hopefully.

Thank you Sharon, blogs are wonderful platform to say what we think, even if the people that it is meant for them will never read it.

Btw, as we speak Iceland is on a process of negotiating its sovereignty for joining the EU.
