Icelandic music experience #1

I decided to start a new tradition. Every now and then I'll bring you one Icelandic song that is heard here in the radio and being sang by young Icelandic girls and boys while standing in line to buy McDonald's.

I decided to start with the biggest hit of 2008. A hit by Veðurguðirnir & Ingó with their song ironically called "Bahama". A song about sun, fun and girls in bikini, exactly what I need right now when winter is lurking behind the door. This is one of the most catchy song you'll ever hear. So if you'll survive the first 40 seconds of the song (or maybe 30) I'm sure you'll start to sing alone...Bahama eyja... Bahama eyja

One more thing. Due to budget problems and rather small audience, many Icelandic songs are released without a video clip. Enjoy the slide show!

This got my toe tapping. Tessa says that if it were played on the radio here in the U.S., people would think it was Spanish.

Love this song, and especially the sort of bilingualism that I think is implied in the use of bahama [pause] eyja because the word eyja is said just the way lots of songs use "Hey" or "Yeah" so that actually the first time I heard the song I did not even realize it was the word eyja (in English of course we just say one is going to the Bahamas, without saying islands, afterall).

Was there no video for this song on the web? You had to make your own? Iceland needs to get with it on the video production wagon, man!

The light-hearted tune makes me want to stand up and dance. I enjoy icelandic music by artists like Sigur Ros, Múm and Bjok (though some of her music videos make my hair stand. ha!) too.

Thank you for commenting on my blog. To answer your question, I get my inspiration mostly from fairytales, music, movies and my childhood. Also from great artists like Ray Caesar, Audrey Kawasaki and Tamaxxx (just to name a few). :)

Have a great day~

Thank you for sharing that - very cool. I always welcome any exposure to a culture I've never experienced, even if it's only a song. And, thank you for signing up to follow my blog; that's very much appreciated! As for winter in Iceland, I can only imagine that it's gloriously beautiful.
